Government, FAA Grant Disney Drone Usage

9:26pm ET

The Federal Government is now allowing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to fly drones over it's CA and FL parks through November 30, 2020.

Special provisions within the application allow Disney to use their drones at night-- and a project Disney is calling "Flixels" which would call for unmanned drones with the capability to shoot lasers and fireworks.

The Federal Aviation Administration says they believe Disney's drone operation can be "conducted safely"-- prompting the approval.

“First, all operations will occur within no-fly zones,” the document said. “Second, proposed shows have flight areas at least 100 feet from permitted guest-viewing areas at all times. Third, Flixels launch from and land within restricted areas and their flight paths will largely take place over water elements and restricted areas.”

Disney filed a patent for “Flixels” with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in 2014.
